I’ve been thinking today of the little things that are currently making me happy. They are not big, life-changing events, but they certainly lift my spirits on mundane, blah days. I’m so grateful for them!
1. Summer produce. Oh I can’t begin to tell you how much I love my visits to the market every week. Trying to eat mostly local, seasonal food means that winter can be a long, endless font of apples, leeks, and potatoes. But in the summer, there’s such wonderful variety! Tomatoes, beans, courgettes, corn, aubergines, but also cherries, peaches, plums, and berries of all sorts. I’m especially fond of the more old-fashioned english fruit like damsons (we have a damson tree in our garden) and greengages. It’s such a joy to plan our meals every week using my collection of cookbooks and food magazines, and my snacks have never been more colourful or tasty.
2. Wearing The Boy’s clothes. I’ve recently discovered that his Barbour jacket is a rather excellent parka on me. It’s been keeping me warm and dry on chilli, drizzly weekend early mornings. Also, t-shirts don’t quite cut it anymore when I’m sitting in the garden so I started wearing my favourite merino jumper that I “borrowed” from him a while back. I think the slightly oversized feeling adds to the cosiness factor.
3. Cuddles with the cat. We are taking care of Maisie the cat (formerly known as The Kitten) while our neighbours are on holiday which means that I spend quite some time every day with a purring ball of fur on my lap. I continue to be obsessed with her paws.
4. Baking. After a period of not much baking at all, it’s so nice to be back in the kitchen. In the last couple of weeks I made bread, pizza, banana bread, blackberry turnovers, and blackberry and apple crumble. I suspect that my baking motivation returning has something to do with Trish’s Cookbook Challenge as well as the return of The Great British Bake Off.
What’s been making you happy recently?
